Mamma Mia! Review: All the ABBA Goodness!

Last night I attended Mamma Mia! at the Fabulous Fox Theater here in Atlanta. This was the second time I had seen the play, and I adored as much, if not more-so, than I did in 2010.

The story is simple. Sophie has invited 3 of her possible dads to her wedding. Her mother Donna has never told her who her dad is, and all she really wants is to have her real father walk her down the isle on her wedding day. When all 3 of the potential dads show up – Sophie takes a little time to get to know each of them. Meanwhile Donna gets an unexpected visit from her old loves.

It’s a great story filled with naughty yet comical moments, and the music is absolutely fantastic. Being an ABBA fan myself, I still have the songs on repeat in my head today. That being said, if you’re not an ABBA fan – you will probably not enjoy Mamma Mia!

Georgia Kate Haege really stole the show as Donna. Her voice was absolutely incredible, and Jeff Drushal also did a wonderful job as Sam. His voice provided a much sweeter sound than Pierce Brosnan’s did in the film. I actually wasn’t a huge fan of the film, because the talent really didn’t do their roles justice. Pierce Brosnan shouldn’t be in any musical… ever. However seeing the play live with the talent it deserved was a charming and delightful experience. Singing along with the rest of the audience to fan-favorites such as “Dancing Queen,” “Take A Chance On Me” and “Mamma Mia” was what truly made the night.

ABBA fans will of course enjoy it for the obvious reasons, and it has a little something for everyone. That being said, this seems like the perfect play for evening out with your girlfriends. The show runs through Sunday, September 28th at the Fox. Get your tickets today!
