‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Ellen Pompeo Kept Second Daughter’s Birth Under Wraps for Two Months

Ellen Pompeo kept the news about her baby’s birth a secret for two months.

The Grey’s Anatomy star announced the news that she and husband Chris Ivery had welcomed a baby girl, named Sienna May, via surrogate on Thursday and took to Twitter to thank her TV castmates for keeping the exciting news to themselves.

And, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! hours later, Pompeo revealed just how long she kept the baby news from the media.

She explained, “She was born two months ago. Pretty good, right?

“The Mayor of New York City married us and I kept that a secret for five days, so I’ve done it before. The covert thing is kinda fun.

“This baby was born via surrogate so I felt an obligation to keep the surrogate’s privacy – that was of utmost importance to me.”

Pompeo also went into detail about the process she and Ivery – and the mystery surrogate – went through to get pregnant.

The actress told host Kimmel, “Chris Ivery has to do what he has to do and provide what he has to provide, and then I have to provide something as well… I have to retrieve the egg, and then they put it together in a dish, the lab technicians, and then they make the embryo and then they insert the embryo into the woman who will carry the child.

“This is an incredible thing to do with your life – to give the gift of carrying someone’s child. I am forever grateful and feel very blessed.

“I was present for the insemination. I held her hand… I looked into the microscope and I saw the embryo… and we prayed and we talked to God… and now we have a gorgeous baby girl.”

Pompeo and Ivery are also parents to daughter Stella Luna, who was a natural birth in 2009.
