‘The Originals’ Star Yusuf Gatewood Talks Tonight’s Episode, ‘Finncent’ and More

The Originals cast has made room for more talent recently with the promotion of Yusuf Gatewood from guest star to series regular. On a recent set visit, we had the opportunity to ask Yusuf what his promotion could mean for the future of Finn/Vincent (aka Finncent) on the show.

Yusuf plays witch Vincent who has been possessed by Original vampire (and brother to the Elijah, Klaus and Rebekah) Finn Mikaelson, whose return means more dysfunction for the Mikaelson family. (SPOILERS AHEAD!) If you’re caught up on the show you know that Finn and Kol are both currently tied up inside the mansion and at the mercy of Elijah and Klaus, thanks to some badass handiwork by Marcel and Hayley, whom I’m sure will also assist with the butt-kicking as needed. When asked about what will immediately follow the last week’s memorable ending, Gatewood replied, “This is an awkward family reunion and I think at this point the most interesting thing is where our loyalties lie at this point. Are we going to stick with our mother and follow through with her plan? Or is there something that the brothers, Elijah and Klaus, can do to pull us to their side? And I think that’s one of the things we’re going to explore more in-depth with this episode coming up.”

Although Cami is the only human on the show, the girl never seems to finds herself with a shortage of supernatural crushes and according to Yusuf, Finn could be the next. “That’s an interesting relationship isn’t it? I mean, one of the most interesting things about Finn in [The Vampire Diaries] universe was his relationship with Sage. It’s women always with this guy! Women are really his weak point, I mean whether it’s Sage, his mother or, in this particular case, Cami, how much she can manipulate him? I feel as though there were genuine feelings that were developing. Whether or not those still exist that’s something that we’re going to find out, but the betrayal, I think, is real for him at this point. I think there was a part of Finn that was opening up to her.”

As much fun as it is to watch the supernatural world’s most dysfunctional family week after week, one still can’t help but wonder if the Mikaelsons will ever come together as one family in the end. “I hope not!” stated Yusuf. “I think that’s why people keep tuning in. It’s just that conflict. And really, it’s not that much different from anybody else’s family. Everybody comes from a crazy family with that one uncle or that one brother who’s doing something that he’s got no business doing. The only thing is, that the stakes are so much higher here because people can suck blood and kill people. This is a supernatural story that’s really, very much grounded in real human behavior and interactions and relationships. That’s the cool thing about it. ”

So what else can you expect from tonight’s episode? Sounds like more family drama just in time for the holidays according to Yusuf: “In 2.08 [tonight’s episode] there are going to be some interesting things happening. The big thing I think everybody’s excited about is Rebekah’s coming back, but within that and her purpose in that, it’s just sort of like peeling back layers on this whole Mikaelson clan, and that’s the cool thing about all of this. We get to peek into what’s really behind some of the actions and the motivations of Esther and Finn… In 2.08 we get another clue as to what’s going on with this family, and why they are the way that they are. This is going to be a really exciting episode on both of those fronts… the return of Rebekah and some more clues as to why the Mikaelsons are the Mikaelsons. ”

It sounds like you don’t want to miss tonight’s all-new episode of The Originals airing at 8pm ET on The CW.
