Ridley Scott Addresses ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ Casting Controversy

Ridley Scott is responding to criticisms surrounding his casting of American, European and Australian actors for lead roles in Exodus: Gods and Kings, insisting the decision was all about securing financing.

The Prometheus director has come under fire for choosing Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton to play historic Egyptian icons Moses and Ramses, respectively, but Scott explains he would not have been able to make the film if he had cast actors of Middle Eastern descent.

He tells Variety, “I can’t mount a film of this budget, where I have to rely on tax rebates in Spain, and say that my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such.

“I’m just not going to get it financed. So the question doesn’t even come up.”
