Jill Scott to Be Honored at Essence’s Black Women in Music Event
R&B singer Jill Scott has been named a special honoree at Essence magazine’s annual Black Women in Music event.
The singer will be feted for her career and will perform on February 5, when bosses at the publication kick off the year-long 45th anniversary celebration of the magazine.
Scott tells Billboard.com, “It will be 15 years in July that my first album came out and Essence has been there the entire time. I’m truly honored.”
EssenceEditor-in-Chief Vanessa K. DeLuca calls Jill “the quintessential Essence woman.” She continued, “Like many of the female artists who inspired her – she has touched the collective soul of women across generations.” Essence President Michelle Ebanks called Scott’s impact on music and the arts groundbreaking, calling the singer “a fearless innovator.”
Previous honorees include Mary J. Blige, Kelly Rowland and Janelle Monae.
Congrats to Jill Scott on being chosen to receive the honor!
