‘Scandal’ Creator Shonda Rhimes and Dee Rees Team Up for ‘The Warmth of Other Suns’

Shonda Rhimes and Shondaland are headed to cable. Her creative genius was bound to spill over from ABC into other arenas eventually and now she’ll be taking those talents to FX.

Rhimes is partnering with Pariah writer-director Dee Rees to bring Isabel Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns to FX as a limited series.

The book tells the story of America’s Great Migration and Second Great Migration which took place from from 1915 to 1970. During this time, African Americans relocated from the South to Midwest, Northeast and West, hoping to find a better life. It examines the massive migration from the viewpoint of three characters who traveled during 3 differet decades: a sharecropper’s wife who left Mississippi in the 1930s; an agricultural worker who left Florida for New York City in the 1940s; and a doctor who left Louisiana for LA in the early 1950s.

According to Variety, “The TV adaptation is in the early stages of development. FX Prods. is shepherding with ABC Signature, the cable arm of ABC Studios, where Shondaland is based. Rees is writing the adaptation and exec producing with Shonda Rhimes and Shondaland’s Besty Beers.”

Rees’ latest project was writing and directing HBO’s Atlanta-filmed Bessie which premieres on the network May 16.
