FOX’s ‘American Idol’ Ending After Season 15

American Idol will be coming to an end after its upcoming 15th season on Fox.

The show will begin its 15th and final season this January, but won’t be a sad sendoff by any means. American Idol XV will be a season-long celebratory event, featuring host Ryan Seacrest and judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr., as they search for the final Idol superstar and pay tribute to the past 14 seasons of the hit show that started it all.

Fox TV Group chairman-CEO Gary Newman and CEO Dana Walden discussed the decision during a conference call today, with Newman admitting that the cancellation “was not an easy decision.”

“We really wanted to do it in a way that felt special and celebratory… and send it off in a way that is as significant as the run it’s had on our network,” he explained.

Walden confirmed that they’d have former Idol judges and contestants back to make appearances in the show’s final season. When it comes to the show’s original judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, the exec insists, “We’d welcome any of them back.”

The Simon Fuller-created series premiered on FOX in 2002 and was ranked as the #1 series on broadcast TV for eight of its 15 seasons.

Will yo be sad to see the show go?
