A ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Spinoff Film Isn’t in the Works…Yet

E.L. James may have announced to the world that another Fifty Shades of Grey book will be released this month, but whether or not that book will make it to the big screen is another question.

James announced yesterday that fans can look out for a new Fifty Shades book, titled Grey, that tells the story of Christian and Anastasia from the billionaire’s perspective, but according to reports, the film’s stars haven’t discussed any possibilities of bringing the film to life after the original Fifty Shades trilogy is completed.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that “neither Dakota Johnson (who plays submissive heroine Anastasia Steele) nor Jamie Dornan (billionaire S&M enthusiast Grey), who are contracted to star in three Fifty Shades films, have spinoff language in their deals. Furthermore, neither had any idea that the Grey novel, which would likely serve as the fourth film in the Fifty Shades oeuvre, was in the works.”

Fifty Shades was a huge success in the box office, grossing $569.7 million worldwide, so if the actors, studio, director and James can work it out, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a spinoff film headed toward theaters after the final installment of the original series Fifty Shades Freed, is released.

The second and third installments of James’ trilogy,Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, are set for releases on Feb. 10, 2017, and Feb. 9, 2018, respectively.
