Alfre Woodard Joins Netflix and Marvel’s ‘Luke Cage’
Alfre Woodard has joined the cast of Marvel and Netflix’s upcoming superhero series, Luke Cage.
Details of the actress’ role are being kept under wraps, but her casting has been confirmed by multiple sites. The actress has a long and varied resume including roles in 12 Years a Slave, True Blood and Desperate Housewives.
Woodard joins previously announced castmember Mike Colter, who’ll take on the role of the show’s title character.
Luke Cage’s complex character first appeared in comic books in the early 1970s. Cage received superhuman strength during experiments he participated in while serving time behind bars.
“Fans have longed to see Luke Cage and in Mike we’ve found the perfect actor,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Marvel’s Head of Television at the time Colter’s casting was officially announced. “Viewers will get to meet Luke Cage in ‘Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,’ and experience why he is such an important superhero in the Marvel mythos.”
Luke Cage will appear in Marvel’s second superhero series on Netflix, AKA Jessica Jones, which premieres later this year, ahead of the premiere of his own series, heading to the network in 2016.
Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are three of four Marvel characters who will each receive their own series on Netflix, the final being Iron Fist.
