ABC Family Picks Up Nicki Minaj Comedy Series

Nicki Minaj is adding the job of executive producer to her already busy schedule, thanks to her new series that’s set to head to ABC Family.

The network has given a series commitment to the rapper/pop star, who will serve as executive producer, for a new single-cam comedy that will be somewhat autobiographical.

The half-hour series, which will shoot in Minaj’s hometown of Queens, New York this winter, is based on the star and her family’s immigration from Trinidad in the early 1990’s. It will focus on her growing up in Queens with her vibrant family and the personal and musical evolution that led to her eventual rise to stardom.

“This is one of the more unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on,” said Minaj in a statement. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”

“Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches,” added Karey Burke, Executive Vice President Programming and Development, ABC Family. “We’re beyond thrilled to bring her one-of-a-kind story to our channel. Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”

In addition to Minaj, the new show has some impressive talent behind it including Kate Angelo (Sex Tape, Will and Grace, Bernie Mac), who penned the pilot and will write and executive produce the series. Minaj, Aaron Kaplan (Life in Pieces, Chasing Life, and Divorce), Stella Bulochnikov and Brian Sher (Boss), and Gee Roberson will also serve as executive producers.

Nicki has been taking the entertainment industry by storm ever since she showed up, and we’re happy to see she’s not showing any signs of slowing.
