‘The Leftovers’ Star Amy Brenneman on ‘Codependent’ Laurie and THAT Scene

Each episode of The Leftovers so far has given us different perspectives of the same story, focusing on different members of the cast. This week we got to see what Laurie (Amy Brenneman) and Tom Garvey (Chris Zylka) have been up to since the events of last season.

Surprisingly enough, the mother and son duo now work together to rescue people from the Guilty Remnant, running a GR rehab of sorts, while Laurie writes a book about her experiences.

After spending her entire first season in silence, what does Brenneman think of Laurie-with-a-voice? “I’m a f*cking codependent! Now that I have my son back it I’m pretty much reliant on him and the work we’re trying to do,” she explained to The Wrap.

Speaking of Laurie’s son, one of the scenes that left everyone talking was when Guilty Remnant member Meg (Liv Tyler) caught up with an unsuspecting Tom and proceeded to rape him, douse him with gasoline, leave him pantsless in the middle of nowhere…and tell him pass along a message to his mom, Laurie: “Meg says hello.”

Laurie found out about the encounter (although not all of the sordid details), and fans can bet that she won’t be letting it go anytime soon.

“I think it’s a war,” Brenneman told THR. “I think that the Guilty Remnant and Meg are like ISIS to her. Laurie’s whole thing is that she’s a cult deprogrammer. With enough love and psychological support, these people can see that the Guilty Remnant is a buggy cult that’s going to use them for canon fodder. So I think that when her son comes back and asks about Meg, chills runs up my spin. Like, “Oh, this isn’t going to go away very quickly.” They are still gathering support, and I think it’s a real slap in the face — and also just the fact that she has had contact with my son, even though I don’t know the extent. That’s just the momma bear in me going, “Oh my God.”
