‘The Leftovers’ Star Christopher Eccleston on Reverend Matt Jamison’s Dilemma

A new revelation, involving Rev. Matt Jamison(Christopher Eccleston) and his invalid wife Mary (Janel Moloney), during last night’s episode of The Leftovers has added yet another layer of mystery to the series.

Spoilers Ahead!

When it was revealed that Mary is pregnant, an act that Matt claims happened on their first night in Jarden,TX, when she “woke up,” fans were put in a position of having to decide whether or not the pregnancy is a result of a miracle or… a non-consensual act.

While viewers are still debating whether or not Mary’s pregnancy has more sinister undertones, Eccleston has his own views on the revelation as well. “I made a decision about whether Matt was lying or not about what went on,” the actor told The Wrap. “My conviction is that he was not lying and that Mary did wake up. Everybody else can think what they like, I made the decision. Damon Lindelof didn’t tell me whether she woke up or not, but I played that to the end.”

We certainly hope that the miracle is true, because that would imply that there’s a little more to Miracle than its name. It would also keep Reverend Jamison, who can’t seem to catch a break, from developing into a far darker character.
