‘The Bastard Executioner’ Has Been Canceled
The Bastard Executioner has been axed by its creator Kurt Sutter and FX.
The period drama was created by Sons of Anarchy‘s Kurt Sutter which centered on a warrior knight in King Edward III’s charge starred Katey Sagal, Stephen Moyer and Lee Jones in the signature role as the Executioner himself.
Sutter decided to pull the plug on the series via an ad in The Hollywood Reporter after a poorly received first season.
“I’m not the guy sitting in my ivory tower spitting shit out not caring if anyone is watching. I like an audience. I don’t want to write something that nobody’s f—ing watching,” Sutter told the site. “And yes, some of that is ego. But some of it is just, [if no one’s watching] then I’m not necessarily doing my job.”
Sutter also told the site that he feels the show didn’t work because “the mythology was a little too dense for some people.” He added, “There’s a glut of period pieces on right now, and I’m sure timing has something to do it. There’s just so many f—ing variables involved in that formula. My sense is that a year from now, people will be like, “Why didn’t you make more?” (Laughs.) I mean, I get so many people telling me they’re on episode four of Sons.”

The show started slow, but it is really really good. Even the theme song gets me going minus the corny axe swing at the end. I think the problem here is that it swung a bit to the corny side in general for the first few episodes. It then settled in and become awesome. I think it would have been better to skip episodes 1-3 and paraphrase that into 1 episode. Then start from there being awesome.
