Olivia Munn Talks Her Character Psylocke in ‘X-Men Apocalypse’

Olivia Munn joins the mutant franchise in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse as Betsy Braddock / Psylocke, whose back story is that she was kidnapped and implanted with bionic eyes. She also possesses the power of telepathy, meaning she can control minds and create projections from afar.

Olivia was drawn in by her character’s use of powers, and co-star James – who plays X-Men founder Charles Xavier – had some ideas of his own to share.

“When most superheroes don’t enjoy killing or don’t want to kill but they will kill if they have to, Psylocke can create anything with her mind,” she explained to Collider. “She can kill from afar, like (fellow mutants) Magneto or Storm, but she chooses to create a sword, which is a very intimate way to kill someone. She experiences it.

“(Using a psy-dagger too) was actually James McAvoy’s idea. He was like, ‘If you can use both hands, then you can go, you can switch, you can…’ Because the thing about sword work is that you’re always keeping somebody off guard. They don’t really know it’s happening. You’re really throwing people off. He was like, ‘Well, you can really throw them off if you’re going from your real sword to your psychic sword and then just switching hands and it’s just…’ I was like, ‘That sounds awesome.’”

Psylocke was a last minute addition to the character line up, with co-writer Simon Kinberg quickly offering the part to Olivia. Upon discovering the casting, X-Men fans drew artwork of her in her purple bodysuit costume, which the actress chose to send to Simon with her answer on whether she’d accept the part.

“It was awesome,” Olivia smiled. “Whenever fans do things like that, I just think it’s the coolest thing. I mean, it probably takes them no time at all but I’m not artistic in that way, so I’m always amazed by it.”
