Eddie Redmayne on Leonardo DiCaprio: He Deserves to Win the Oscar

Eddie Redmayne completely agrees with everyone who thinks 2016 is Leonardo DiCaprio’s year to win an Oscar.

Leonardo has been in the running for an Academy Award four times before, but he has always missed out on the coveted prize. However, his film The Revenant has swept the board at the Golden Globes, BAFTAS and SAGs, which many believe makes him a shoe-in for the golden statue.

British star Eddie was 2015’s awards season darling, thanks to his role in The Theory of Everything, and despite being in the running for the best actor Oscar once again for The Danish Girl, he’s actually hoping Leonardo bags the award.

“I was lucky enough to audition for a film with Leonardo DiCaprio about 10 years ago, I spent 15 minutes working with him and it’s one of the more inspiring 15 minutes of my life. I think he’s extraordinary and deserves it all.”

The Oscars will close the 2016 awards season when they take place on February 28. While the A-list have a packed schedule during the ceremonies, Eddie admits it’s always fun bumping into the performers he admires the most.

“It’s lovely because you get to meet your heroes,” he grinned. “I got to meet Benicio del Toro last night which was amazing. And then get to see old friends.”

One of these old friends is his The Danish Girl co-star Alicia Vikander, with the co-stars catching up at Sunday night’s BAFTAs.

Once the Academy Awards are out the way, Eddie plans to take a little break from moviemaking.

“I’m taking a holiday, I can’t wait,” he revealed. “I’ve just finished making Fantastic Beats, J.K. Rowling’s new film.”

The actor will also soon become a first time father, as he and wife Hannah Bagshawe are expecting a baby.
