Jared Leto has joined the cast of The Outsider. The Academy Award-winning Dallas Buyers Club star is taking on yet another unusual role in director Marin Zandvilet’s forthcoming action-thriller.
The crime drama, set following the conclusion of World War II, is not cliche in the slightest, with Deadline reporting the plot centers around an imprisoned American soldier, played by Leto, who escapes from lockup with the help of his yakuza gangster cellmate. Once free, Leto’s character must repay his debt to the mobster by getting involved in Japan’s criminal underworld.
The Outsider will be written by Andrew Baldwin and the film is expected to begin shooting this fall.
Meanwhile Leto has a lot of exciting projects on the go, as he recently wrapped filming on upcoming superhero flick Suicide Squad, in which he depicts notorious villain the Joker.
The 44-year-old star embraced method acting on the set of Suicide Squad and director David Ayer previously revealed Leto’s performance left his colleagues in awe.
“When he steps onto the set the world stops. Everything stops,” Ayer told Total Film magazine. “What Jared has done is absolutely incredible. What he’s done is so powerful, so menacing, so palpable, you can feel him.
“The crew stops working and just watches him. I have to get everybody going again because he’s so fascinating.”
Although Leto fully embraced his role as the Joker, refusing to break character in between shoots, he recently revealed the method acting experience left him feeling pretty lonely.
“There was definitely a period of… detachment,” he told Entertainment Weekly magazine last October. “I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games.”
Leto went on to compare the whole process to “giving birth out of my prick hole”.
Suicide Squad reaches theaters on August 5, 2016!
