Ian Somerhalder Says ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Is Ending After Season 8

The Vampire Diaries Things We Lost in the Fire

The news was released just a few weeks ago that CW had renewed The Vampire Diaries for Season 8, but according to series star Ian Somerhalder it will be the last for the series.

“We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice,” Somerhalder confirmed at a fan convention this past weekend.

While the news hasn’t yet been confirmed by series creator Julie Plec or the CW, Somerhalder’s fellow star, Kat Graham, had released a statement saying that she’ll be leaving the series after this next season.

“Season eight will be my last season,” Graham stated. “But you know what? Another season is a whole other year, and we’re going to blow it out.”

Plec has gone on record before saying that she will continue the series as long as both Somerhalder and co-star Paul Wesley are still involved.

“I finally realized that my destiny on this show, creatively, is tied in to Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. And I mean that in a really good way. As long as those boys who I now consider my friends want to keep telling the story, then I won’t walk away from telling the story,” Plec explained. “When they are ready to be done telling the story, I will put my pencil down and say that I’m done too, and then we will work together to end it in the best way possible.”

“There’s always things that could go wrong in that scenario, there’s always pressure that can be put on,” Plec continued. “But… the three of us I’d like to think will make the creative decision of when the show should be over.”
