James Gunn Gave Notes on ‘Doctor Strange’ Script

Director Scott Derrickson admits he turned to a Marvel veteran for advice on the Doctor Strange script.

Produced by Marvel Studios and Walt Disney, Doctor Strange tells the story of Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a neurosurgeon who after a horrific car accident discovers a hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions. The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams and Tilda Swinton.

During the world premiere of Captain America: Civil War in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, Derrickson talked about the new movies and shared that Marvel Studios is basically one big family when it comes to the directors of the individual films.

“Everybody talks to everybody,” he told Comicbook.com, adding that when looking at the script for his new film he consulted Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

“I got notes on the Doctor Strange script from James Gunn, and I talk to him every once in awhile, ask him questions throughout the process.” he said.

It’s perhaps not surprising that out of all of the writing and directing talent Derrickson could have consulted for Doctor Strange, that he’d go straight for Gunn’s expertise. The 45-year-old director broke ground within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with his film, which rather than telling another tale of gods among men, instead focuses on a group of extraterrestrial misfits. Guardians of the Galaxy was also a successful gamble on Marvel’s part, ranking as the highest grossing superhero film of 2014.

The comments come as Cumberbatch, 39, revealed the first trailer for Doctor Strange during an appearance on U.S. talkshow Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday. The Sherlock Holmes star previously said he was “very excited” to take on the role of the beloved superhero, and told Entertainment Weekly last December that fans won’t be disappointed. “There’s going to be crazy s**t going on,” he added.

Doctor Strange is slated to hit theatres from October. Take a look at the trailer below!
