Peter Berg to Direct ‘Battleship’ Movie

Universal has confirmed that Peter Berg (Hancock) will be directing the big screen adaptation of Battleship. Battleship is set for a July 1st, 2011 release date and will be the first of two films Berg has signed on to direct. The other will be Lone Survivor, which is an Afgan war drama. Due to the deal with Universal, do not expect to see Hancock 2 or his Dune adaptation anytime soon. Berg commented on directing Battleship, saying the following…

“As a kid, I was dragged from Navy museum to museum, and spent so much time on ships, listening to my father talk about the great battles of WWII, I did my high school thesis on the Battle of Midway. When this came up, it didn’t take me long to find a take for a film that is filled with raucous action-packed naval battles.”

Berg says the film, which is being scripted by Steve Oedekerk (Kung Pow: Enter the Fist), will be “a contemporary story of an international five-ship fleet engaged in a very dynamic, violent and intense battle.”
