Moana

Disney’s Moana continues to dominate the domestic office, taking in an additional $18.8 million over the weekend for its third week at number one.

The animated film, which features the vocal talents of Dwayne Johnson, has now taken its total domestic gross in North America to $145 million.

Putting up a strong fight for first, but ultimately landing in second was the Georgia-filmed Office Christmas Party, with $17.5 million. The holiday comedy stars Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, Kate McKinnon and T.J. Miller.

The Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them lands in third, while Arrival and Doctor Strange round out the new top five.

Also worth mentioning, FanBolt’s pick for best film on the year, La La Land debuted in limited release in New York and Los Angeles. The musical grossed $855,000 on limited release. The early success sets a new record for a five-theater opening with $171,000 per theater, surpassing the previous best of $147,000 for The Master in 2012.

La La Land, directed by Damien Chazelle, expands to a wide release this Friday, but it won’t be the only big draw for film fans – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story also opens.
