‘Kong: Skull Island’ Steals Box Office Lead from ‘Logan’
Kong: Skull Island has charged to the top of the North American box office with a $61 million opening weekend – far exceeding studio bosses’ expectations and also stealing the lead from Hugh Jackman’s Logan.
Kong, which cost an estimated $185 to produce, also performed well overseas bringing in $81.6 million.
Coming in second this weekend was Logan which brought in an additional $37.8 million bringing it’s 10 day total to just over $154 million in North America.
Landing in third was Jordan Peele’s acclaimed horror movie Get Out, which made $21 million in its third weekend on release.
The Shack, which made $10.1 million, and The Lego Batman Movie, whcih made 7.8 million round out the top five.
Octavia Spencer and Sam Worthington’s faith-based drama The Shack has grossed $32.3 million in two weeks (coming in fourth this week), while The Lego Batman Movie, which came in fifth this week with $7.8 million, has hauled in $159 million at the North American box office over five weeks.
This Friday, Beauty and the Beast hits theaters and is expected to take the top spot with upwards of $110 million domestically.
