Netflix Plans ‘Carmen Sandiego’ Series with ‘Stranger Things’ Star and ‘Jane the Virgin’ Star Gina Rodrieguez

Netflix has ordered an animated reboot of Carmen Sandiego with Jane the Virgin‘s Gina Rodrieguez voicing the title character and Stranger Things‘ star Finn Wolfhard voicing the Player, Carmen’s friend and accomplice.

The new series will find Carmen Sandiego traveling around the world and pulling off a string of international (and yes, educational) heists. However, Netflix isn’t completely reinventing the wheel – the reboot will also delve into Carmen’s past and explore why she became a super thief.

The franchise first began in 1985 with the release of the computer game “Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego”. The game was put out by Brøderbund Software, and was followed by a number of titles of the next several decades. Players were able to track Carmen not only as she traveled the world, but also the space-time continuum. In 2015, the newest game was released, “Carmen Sandiego Returns”.

The popular game series also spawned a TV series by the same name which premiered on PBS in 1991. “Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego” (an animated cartoon), debuted on Fox in 1994 with a “A Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego” spin-off later following in 1996. The franchise also included board games, books, comic books, films and even a concert series.

The series has a planned premiere date of 2019 – and while we’ll definitely be watching – we also kinda wished the game show was coming back too – and that adults were eligible to be contestants. Who wouldn’t like one of those jackets? Am I right? Or am I right? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
