Mark Ruffalo and The Solutions Project Host Launch of Clean Energy Campaign for Atlanta

The Solutions Project

The Solutions Project and actor Mark Ruffalo have teamed up to launch ATL100, a multi-week campaign that will put the spotlight on local heroes who are helping Atlanta achieve its commitment to running on 100% renewable energy sources. Earlier this year, Atlanta became the 27th city to commit to achieving 100% renewable energy by 2035, and last night the Solutions Project hosted an event to honor five local superheroes for their dedication to this vision and their community.

Ruffalo, who is one of the co-founders of The Solution Project, was present to help honor the five individuals – and we have highlights from the event below!

“We can do amazing things. We have the technology to do it. The wind is in our sails economically and it just takes us going out to the world and telling everybody the good news — and the good news is that we don’t need fossil fuels anymore. Clean energy from wind, water and sun is the fastest way to our freedom. Whoever controls your energy controls your life controls your destiny and this is how way we take back our destiny, by giving energy to each and every community and letting them make, store, and sell their own energy as they see fit.” Ruffalo commented.

Here’s a look at the 5 local superheroes that were spotlighted during the event.

  • Shan Arora – A data superhero and former tax attorney who crunches the numbers on Georgia’s energy to chart a new path where Atlanta is powered proudly by solar energy.
  • Becky Rafter – A wonder woman pushing Atlanta in a new direction with a lot less nuclear waste and a lot more fierce women taking the reins in their neighborhoods to protect the people and places they love.
  • Dr. Joyce Dorsey – Joyce works tirelessly to get local Atlantans the support they need to live the life they want – from help with skyrocketing energy bills to job training, Joyce basically runs a superhero training school.
  • Amelia Shenstone –Amelia champions clean energy and energy efficiency at every turn pushing ALL of Atlanta towards healthy energy for everybody.
  • Dr. Yomi Noibi – An environmental health crusader who wants everyone to own their power. This doctor knows that healthy people need healthy communities powered by the wind, water, and sun.

Two familiar faces to FanBolt readers were also present – Myself and Matt (from Shakefire.com)! While the third member of the ATLas Podcast wasn’t present – we were still honored to represent our proud geek community here in Atlanta – which is the hometown of both Matt and I. Atlanta means the world to me, and it’s initiatives like this that make our city so unique and special.

Our city – and our planet needs your help… now more than ever. There was a beautiful proverb shared by one of the honorees last night that really struck that cord in me – “We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”

Food for thought.

ATL100 is a four month series of events and activations aimed at driving momentum behind equity-rooted leadership in Atlanta, and highlighting Atlanta’s leadership in transitioning to 100% clean energy for all. ATL100 will celebrate the benefits of a 100% clean energy transition for Atlanta- clean air and water, affordable power, good jobs, and energy independence – and will spotlight Atlanta as an example other cities around the country can follow as they look to make the transition to 100% clean energy.
