‘The Walking Dead’ Season 9 Trailer Premieres at Comic-Con 2018 and Sets a New Tone for Season 9

The Walking Dead

One of the San Diego Comic-Con 2018 panels fans were most looking forward to, and the press room I was most looking forward to, was for that of AMC’s The Walking Dead. As the series heads into it’s ninth season (premiering on October 7), the show will be losing not only its lead actor, Andrew Lincoln who plays Rick Grimes, but also fan-favorite and Hilltop leader/badass Maggie Rhee (played by Lauren Cohan – who is leaving the series for her new ABC series, Whiskey Cavalier).

Since the news first surfaced that these two would be departing before the end of the upcoming season, fans and media alike haven’t really had a chance to ask to questions (minus Lauren Cohan briefly addressing it in CinemaCon back in April). And there had been even less coverage of Lincoln leaving the series, as AMC still hasn’t released an official statement on it.

“My relationship with Rick Grimes is far from over. And a sort of large part of me will always be a machete-wielding, stetson-wearing, zombie-slaying sheriff deputy from London, England,” Lincoln joked with fans at the Comic-Con panel. “This has always been an ensemble and it will continue to be an ensemble. No one is bigger than the story, and the story this year is unbelievable.”

Joining Andrew Lincoln on the Comic-Con panel for the series was Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, along with Executive Producer and Showrunner Angela Kang, Executive Producers Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert and Executive Producer, Director and Special Effects Make-up Supervisor Greg Nicotero.

Alright, so initial thoughts. I’m honestly way more excited about the overall feel and tone of this upcoming season than I have been the last few seasons. I’m not happy that Lincoln and Cohan will be leaving – but I am excited for the direction that they’re taking the series (before they leave) along with the new showrunner Angela Kang.

All of that being said… they are some pretty major hints/spoilers in this trailer for what’s coming up… did you catch them? I won’t spoil anything… but I’ll give you a clue. There’s a scene at the end of the trailer with Rosita (Christian Serratos) and a male character I can’t quite make out… They are covered in mud and hiding from a horde of walkers that are passing by above. This is a new level of fear for Rosita… why? If you’re a comics reader, you know there should be a line of dialogue in this scene that explains everything…

Listen for it…..
