A Look at the Best Picture Nominees for the 91st Academy Awards

One great thing about the new year is awards season, and the Academy Awards is February 24. That’s only a month away, so if you haven’t caught up there a few films that are must-sees. This year at the Academy awards we will see more diversity and more Jimmy! Jimmy Kimmel is hosting the Academy Awards for the third time. We all know good things come in threes.

In case, you haven’t seen the nominees for Best Picture yet. I created a list the of films nominated, and I have linked the trailers for each film.

Best Picture Nominees for the 91st Academy Awards

Black Panther

Black Panther is making history. First, Black Panther is the first Marvel movie with a predominately African-American cast. Second, Black Panther is the first ever superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture.

Blackkklansman

Blackkklansmanis based on the memoir by Ron Stallworth. Set in Colorado Springs in the 1970s where Stallworth is the first African American detective in the police department. Stallworth sets out to infiltrate the local chapter of the KKK. Blackkklansman is not only up for Best Picture, but also for Best Director, Spike Lee, and Best Supporting Actor, Adam Driver.

Bohemian Rhapsody

As you may have guessed, Bohemian Rhapsody is a biographical film about the iconic rock band Queen. Critics praised Rami Malek’s performance as Freddy Mercury earning him a Best Actor Nomination.

The Favourite

The Favourite has a whopping ten nominations at the Academy Awards. This film takes place in the 1700s, cousins, Sarah Churchill and Abagail Masha, vie to be the favorite of an emotionally unstable Queen Anne. All three actresses playing these roles are up for awards. Olivia Colman for Best Actress and both Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone up for Best Supporting Actress.

Roma

also has ten nominations at the Academy Awards and is making history as Netflix’s first movie to be nominated for Best Picture. Roma and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon tie for most Oscar nominations received by a foreign language film. Yalitza Aparicio is a nominee for Best Actress for her work in Roma.

Green Book

Green Book depicts the real-life friendship of classical and jazz pianist, Don Shirley, and his driver/bodyguard, Tony Vallelonga, during Shirley’s 1962 tour. Mahershala Ali, who plays Don Shirley, is up for Best Supporting Actor. Viggo Mortensen, who plays Tony Vallelonga, is up for Best Actor.

A Star Is Born

A Star Is Born is the fourth remake of the 1937 film of the same name. The Georgia Film Critics Association, which FanBolt editor Emma Loggins is a member of, recently awarded the film 2018 Best Picture. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper star in the movie and are nominees for Best Actress and Best Actor. Bradley Cooper also directed the film but did not receive a nomination for Best Director, which some think to be one of the biggest “Oscar snubs” this year.

Vice

Last but not least, Vice is nominated for best picture. Once again, Christian Bale transforms for his role as former Vice President Dick Cheney. Earning him a nomination for Best Actor. Amy Adams and Sam Rockwell also star. They are nominees for Best Supporting Actress and Actor.
