No Matt Damon The Bourne Legacy

The Bourne Legacy writer/director Tony Gilroy confirms that Matt Damon will not return this time around for franchise.

While the name sounds familiar, that is solely due to the fact that Universal release took the title from the Eric Van Lustbader book based on the series created by Robert Ludlum. However, the storyline throughout that book will not be used at all.

Gilroy, however, makes it clear to fans that Damon is not being replaced. Actually, he’s making way for an all new superhero to emerge, which was all confirmed in his statement as follows: “This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project.”

Gilroy goes on to encourage fans to think of this new edge as more of an expansion, stating: “Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy… the world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].”

Bourne still alive? A return? Now you’ve got our attention!

A release date has not been set yet for the project.
