‘The Hobbit’ Gets A Bilbo Baggins

Warner Bros. has announced that Martin Freeman (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), has been cast as Bilbo in The Hobbit.

The band of dwarves that enlist Bilbo’s help have been cast as well. Richard Armitage (MI-5) will play Thorin Oakenshield, Graham McTavish (24) will play Dwalin, John Callen has been cast as Oin, Stephen Hunter is Bombur while Mark Hadlow (King Kong) will play Dori. Peter Hambleton will play Gloin, while Aidan Turner (Being Human) and Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders) will play Kili and Fili.

“Despite the various rumors and speculation surrounding this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us,” said Peter Jackson. “There are a few times in your career when you come across an actor who you know was born to play a role, but that was the case as soon as I met Martin. He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave – exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit.”

  1. Should be interesting to see Mr. Freeman play a younger more energetic Ian Holm. With Jackson at the helm though, Im sure it will be quite good.

  2. Oh definitely. I’m sure it’s going to be a great movie. Just sad we won’t get to see some of our favorite LOTRers. 🙂

  3. Any news as to McKellan reprising his role though, cause he technically should still be the only one playing good ole wise Gandalf

  4. I haven’t heard anything yet – but I would hope that he would. I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t.

  5. McKellan has been one of the most vocal about giving updates on the production on his website and getting a copy of the script, etc so it sounds like he has already committed to the film. Andy Serkis is also returning as Gollum. I like that so it gives some continuity between this film and the LOTR Series.
