Bronco – Orville Peck
I am definitely late to the party on this artist but if you have not heard the absolutely stunning baritone vocals by the country artist Orville Peck, I suggest you do so now. Some good friends recommended my giving him a listen and when I did my mouth dropped! Not only because of his absolutely amazing vocals but also because of the songs on his latest release, ‘Bronco.’ They are absolutely catching from a lyrics, melody, and tone perspective. I tell you, I have not heard anyone with a voice like this in a long time. It is one of those situations where I had to keep listening to the next song just to see if he would somehow ‘mess up.’ Well, of course he does not, and if you think he doesn’t sound as good performing live, just go look up some of his videos of his live performances on YouTube. I just don’t get how someone can have a natural singing voice like this.
In my opinion, Peck sounds like a cross between Elvis, Roy Orbison and Chris Isaak. I find it hard to classify him as country – I see it as more country/rockabilly/punk- but from what I read that is what he relates to and classifies his sound as. I am the first to say country music is not my go-to genre but in this case I am in. While his music is coming out during the modern country area, it feels older and does not have the ‘popish’ sound most country artists have.
Anyway, his range is so amazing and it goes from soulful to sad in a second. ‘Bronco’ was released in April of 2022, although Peck released an earlier album in 2019 (which is also good) and I just cannot imagine this not shooting to the top of the charts in the next several months as it is a masterpiece. To not do so would be an absolute injustice to this great vocalist. This one is definitely on repeat right now and probably will be for a long time.
