By the Book
I will probably circle back to this later on when I have more thoughts but have a couple to start with. Many movies (and TV shows) are based on books that many of us love. Some really get it right and others miss the mark so bad it makes you physically shake. Please sound off from either side. I will start:
1. No Country for Old Men (got it right) – If you have never read this book by Cormac McCarthy it is a good one. And as I read it I could basically imagine the Coen Brothers literally reading it out loud while the other wrote it in script format. Very well done.
2. Ready Player One (got it wrong) – I love this book so much and it had such potential with Spielberg directing but it fell way short. From changing most of the key “Easter egg” scenes (the race that started off the film was not in the book at all and set the tone) to the forced romance between Art3mus and Percival it really just missed the mark for me. I had to force myself to finish it.
3. Game of Thrones (got half right, then collapsed) – I know this is a controversial one but as a fan of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series this series started off strong and kept to the source material through about season 4/5 then it just started going on its own and went in weird directions that don’t line up in the book world. entire characters and storylines were abandoned. I understand that GRR Martin has not finished the books but there was so much material cut from the existing books you could have run this series another 3-4 seasons and given it a lot more depth and made the ending easier to understand.
