Greta Van Fleet – new album
Ok, enough of the complaints and comparisons about Greta Van Fleet sounding like or trying to emulate Led Zeppelin. Even with their debut album I admit I had a few minutes of, ‘Hmmm, this guy kind of sounds like Robert Plant’ but then I listened to that album, ‘Anthem of the Peaceful Army’, and appreciated it for what it was – a 70’s sounding rock album with some great rhythms and vocals. Well the same can be said with their latest album, ‘The Battle at Garden’s Gate.’ I immediately was hooked with the opener, ‘Heat Above’, with lead singer Josh Kiszka throwing out great vocals! The band definitely still has that 70’s sounding flair with this latest release but what is wrong with that? It is great rock and roll and beats some, if not most, of the formulaic, bland studio produced music being released today that has one goal – to make money and be all over social media. I don’t feel that with GVF.
I love the segway of the hard rocking opener of ‘Heat Above’ into another heavy sounding ‘My Way, Soon.’ The slower songs are not my favorites (such as ‘Broken Bells’ which I can already hear critics doing the ‘They sound like’ comparison) but they still are not bad either. These guys sound like they are just rocking, rolling and having a good time doing it!
This album has been on repeat the past couple of days and probably will stay on repeat for a bit! Definitely give it a listen if you dare!
