Meat Loaf
I will never forget being 12 years old and buying this album – another in those that had a big impact on me musically – and taking it to my sister and brother-in-law’s house to listen to it. I remember seeing the album cover in the record store – I think Record Bar at Dutch Square – and, at that age especially, thinking it was so cool so I had to buy it. When we put it on the turntable and it started playing I thought, ‘What in the world have I done?’ I did not get it at first but my brother-in-law loved it immediately and raved about the guitar playing, riffs and loud vocals. So, I decided to keep listening to it and it definitely grew on me and now it is one I go to for great lyrics, sounds and music in general. The album is the debut by Meat Loaf and composer Jim Steinman, ‘Bat Out of Hell.’ What a crazy, rock-and-roll album! This album has so many good songs on it and I remember watching Meat Loaf performances on Midnight Special and his crazy antics! I never did confirm if this was true or not but I remember hearing stories that he would get so worked up at his shows that he had to go offstage for oxygen ‘breaks.’ Anyway, this is a great album and is one that has stood the test of time!
