Nobody
As most movies buffs know, action heroes are now about a dime a dozen, trying to outdo James Bond in some capacity or another. The actors trying to fill that role include Clint Eastwood, Will Smith, Matt Damon, Keanu Reeves, Liam Neeson, among numerous others. Some of the more current films have been pretty good while the others just failed miserably. Well a new action hero is here and I do hope we get to see him again. This is Bob Odenkirk (from ‘Better Caul Saul’) starring as Hutch Mansell in the newly released film, ‘Nobody.’ What a great action film!
Hutch appears to be your average middle aged man, married with two kids, who goes about the same routine day in and day out. He actually seems like a very boring guy living a very boring life. When his family is robbed one evening and Hutch does not respond or react as the family or anyone expected – even one of the police officers on the scene says something like, ‘Man, if that has been my family’ – he decides he needs to do something to save face with his family, especially his teenage son. It is at this point that Hutch decides to take action and action we definitely get. In some ways I see some similarities to John Wick, but only in slight moments and even those don’t really bother me.
The action, as mentioned, is non-stop and is so good. I never would have expected Odenkirk to play in this type of role although I have to admit to never having seen him in anything before. He just does not have the ‘look’ of an action hero and perhaps that is part of the appeal to me. Odenkirk does a great job at balancing the role of a family man and this tough guy who is determined to protect his fmsolh, including his dad, played by Christopher Lloyd in a fun, surprising performance.
The take on the action and fighting is similar to other films but there are other unique twists that are seen as well and it keeps it interesting. While some of the plot is also a little bit far fetched, again, it does not take away from the enjoyment of the film. This one belongs to Odenkirk all the way and I would love to see his appearance as this character again.
