The Cars
Another significant album from the late 70’s that influenced me was one by a band who released their self-titled album, ‘The Cars’, in 1978. What a different sound and one that stayed with me for a long time. I first heard one of the songs from this album in a movie I mentioned in another post, ‘Over The Edge’, and it immediately caught my attention. The album had 9 songs and I believe 6 were hits for the band. It is just an amazing album!
Then they resulted in providing me with one of the more significant memories I have of when I started high school (in 1979). It was seeing all the football jocks hanging out in the parking lot with their car doors or back windows open and playing one album in particular during that first year – ‘Candy-O’, the second album by The Cars. I just thought it was the coolest thing and definitely was influenced by that album as well. ‘Candy-O’ was so different and had rock vibes to it yet also a touch of the incoming New Wave style to it. The opening song on the album, ‘Let’s Go’, is absolutely an amazing song and is a great opening. It is definitely one of my favs.
Of course with the MTV era, The Cars would go on to produce a lot of videos and have a number of commercial hits, but their first two albums are the ones that I love the most!
