The Clash
Looking back on other albums that had an early influence on me, I cannot forget how punk came on the scene about the time I was in high school and how ‘radical’ everyone thought it was. About the same time you had New Wave groups such as Men at Work, A Flock of Seagulls, Berlin (loved Terri Nunn and her voice), Duran Duran, Depeche Mode and many other bands that I loved. But two albums in particular by the same band had a harder edge to them than other bands at that time (at least in my opinion) and those are ‘London Calling’ and ‘Combat Rock’ by the classic group, The Clash. Those albums were released in the late 70’s, early 80’s and struck a nerve with me and many others in this country. Besides The Sex Pistols, they are probably the premiere punk rock band that most people know from that genre with a major influence. They were a band that were a symbol of rebellion and speaking out politically while also creating some great music.
From ‘London Calling’, with a whopping 19 songs, how can you forget the various songs of youth and energy coming out of each song. My favs are the title song, ‘Lost in the Supermarket’ and the classic ‘Train in Vain.’ The ‘Combat Rock’ album has my favs ‘Rock the Casbah’, ‘Know Your Rights’ and another classic, ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go.’ That one song in particular brings back a classic memory from high school. The band members have gone their separate ways and the music industry has lost Joe Strummer but they definitely left a mark in music history.
