The Maidens
Wow, what a novel! I loved it! ‘The Maidens’ by Alex Michaelides is an amazing, heart-stopping thriller that I could not put down. If you liked his debut novel, ‘The Silent Patient’, wait until you read his latest. He is definitely on a roll as far as writing.
‘The Maidens’ is about Mariana, a therapist who really focuses on group therapy, who goes to Cambridge University to be with her niece, Zoe, whose best friend Tara has been found murdered on campus. Mariana not only feels responsible for Zoe, and adores her, but needs a change of scenery as she is still suffering from the loss of her husband in an accidental drowning while on a trip to Greece.
I don’t want to give too much away but while on campus, which just so happens to be the same university she attended and where she met the love of her life, Sebastian, she decides to play investigator in the murder mystery and it is a doozy.
I loved the storyline, the characters, the many references to Greek tragedy (which plays quite a role in this novel) and most importantly the twist – I big one I myself never saw coming!
Kudos to Alex Michaelides for writing such a great suspense novel. This was a read I could not get through fast enough and I have not felt like that in a long time!
