DVD Review: The Goonies 25th Anniversary Edition
It’s a classic and one of the most beloved movies from the 80’s. Not to mention it was staple of cinematic memories for so many of us growing up. And with holidays right around the corner, it’s the perfect present for adventure lovers, kids, or even the inner-kid in you.
The story, for those of you were too young to enjoy it or perhaps just deprived of seeing it, is one of good verses evil. The conflict is introduced early – a developer has purchased the neighborhood the Goonies call home, and he has plans to flatten all the homes for a country club and the corresponding golf course. This doesn’t sit too well with the Goonies. Luckily, the gang discovers a treasure map which they hope will lead them to a treasure they can use to buy back their homes. It’s not your typical suburban adventure though. Once the Goonies find a hidden entrance under a fireplace, they embark into a world that they never could have imagined – finding themselves aboard pirate ships and in underground passage ways.
I love seeing anniversary releases with creative packaging and special extras to get fans excited about their favorite movies again. The Goonies 25th Anniversary Edition is no exception. It’s the best anniversary packaging I’ve seen in sometime, and the special features are plentiful. Not only do you get a Blu-ray copy of the film, you also get a brand new board game, 10 awesome storyboards, a 64-page souvenir guide, and small booklet of “Where Are They Now”, and more. The Blu-ray includes director and cast commentary, a making-of featurette, and a Cyndi Lauper music video. Even if you already have a DVD copy of the film, it’s worth picking up again just for all the extras.

It’s definitely on my Christmas list. I remember watching this over and over when I was around age 7-13. It has a soft spot in my heart, and so does Cyndi Lauper, so that extra bonus video is a big plus for me! The other extras are so juicy! It’s nice to get a collectors edition worth being called a ‘collectors edition’.
