Atlanta’s Illuminarium Invites You to Take a Journey to the Moon and Beyond

Illuminarium: SPACE: A Journey to the Moon & Beyond

Calling all space geeks! (Specifically, ones located in Atlanta, though this is worth a trip if you’re not local!) SPACE: A Journey To The Moon & Beyond is officially premiering on June 29th, 2022 at Illuminarium. And it’s out of this world!

Illuminarium’s SPACE is an immersive experience that takes you on an extraordinary journey across the galaxy. Only 12 people have ever walked on the Moon. And guests have the opportunity to join them as they fly through a technicolor nebula, kick up dust on the moon, see Saturn’s rings up close, and weave through an asteroid belt.

I got to check out an early press preview of the experience last week, and I was blown away. I wish I could start out every weekday morning sitting in this space. It was so calming and inspiring – and just really freaking rad.

Space Travel to the Moon and Beyond

Guests can also travel through time with a history of the journey to space. Then observe a futuristic colony. And also listen as astronauts prepare for blast-off. And it all starts with a simulated rocket take0off where you can watch the smoke billow from beneath your feet as you lift off the ground and head towards the sky (Check out my Instagram (second slide) to see a video of this!).

So how is all of this experience possible? Illuminarium has 46 4k laser projectors that come together to transmit over 3 billion pixels to make every moment of your experience unbelievably vivid. The visuals are completed by over 5,000 speakers that are concealed behind acoustically transparent surfaces throughout the experience space. The effect? A a 3D audience experience.

But Illuminarium doesn’t stop there, they also have 141 movers underneath your feet that delivers localized frequency experience that syncs perfectly with the scenes around you. And there’s even infused air with a subtle scent based on what the astronauts reported smelling during their missions.

However, one of the coolest features of the space (and my personal favorite) is Illuminarium’s 3D sensing system, which can detect movement. This system triggers a more inactive environment that allows you to leave footsteps on the moon’s surface, break up astroids, and even kick up moon dust.

Bottomline? Illuminarium’s SPACE, which consists of 8 unique scenes, is the most geek-out worthy experience in Atlanta. Every moment is vividly breathtaking, whether you just want to sit and enjoy it – or you want to get an astronomically cool selfie (pun intended).

As a side note, myself and my friend Matt Rodriguez, who runs Shakefire.net, are actively campaigning for a Star Wars cosplay event in the space during Dragon Con. We’re keeping our fingers crossed!
