Early Life

Daniel Craig was born in Chester, Cheshire (in the United Kingdom), on March 2, 1968. His mother, Carol Olivia, was an art teacher. And his father, Timothy John, was a midshipman in the Merchant Navy. Craig also has an older sister, Lea, born in 1965.

The family also became the landlord of two pubs in Cheshire. However, Craig’s parents divorced in 1972. He moved with his sister to the Wirral Peninsula, where he lived with his mother. And he attended primary school in Hoylake before finishing his education in West Kirby.

Craig became interested in acting at the young age of six. He acted in school plays and debuted in the Frodsham Primary School’s rendition of Oliver. He acted in various plays before being accepted at the National Youth Theatre, in London, in 1984. And in 1988, Craig joined the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1991.

Acting Career

Daniel Crag made his big screen debut on the screen in 1992. First, he played an Afrikaner in The Power of One. From there, he played a handful of minor roles in shows such as Boon and Covington Cross. Then, in 1993, he returned to the stage, playing Joe in Angels in America, which the Royal National Theatre put on.

In 1993, Daniel Craig was a guest star in two episodes of the United States show, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. That same year, he guest starred in various British TV shows, such as Sharpe’s Eagle and Between the Lines.

In 1994, he appeared in another stage production called Les Grandes Horizontales. The National Theatre Studio put it on, and he would meet his second wife, Rachel Weisz, there.

The James Bond Franchise

Without question, Daniel Craig is best known for playing James Bond. His involvement with the James Bond film franchise started in 2005. Initially, Eon Productions reached out and inquired about his interest in playing the character. However, Craig wasn’t sold on taking the role and reached out to friends and colleagues for their advice.

Eventually, Craig agreed to take on the role of the iconic MI6 agent. He was the first actor to play Bond, that had been born after the series started in 1968. Other actors to play James Bond include Roger Moore, Sean Connery, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan.

Casino Royale Through Spectre

His first Bond film, Casino Royale, debuted on November 14th, 2006. It had a budget of $150 million and grossed more than $600 million worldwide. It’s reported that Craig made $3.2 million for his work in the film.

His second Bond film was Quantum of Solace. Released in 2008, it earned $589 million worldwide on its budget of $200 million. Craig reportedly received a bit of a pay bump for this one, making $7.2 million for the film.

Then came 2012’s Skyfall. The film had a budget of $200 million and earned more than $1.1 billion worldwide. Receiving another pay raise for this film, Craig reportedly made a $17 million base salary with $3 million in box office bonuses.

2015 brought Spectre. The Sam Mendes-directed film earned over $880 million on an initial budget of $245 million. Craig earned a base salary of $25 million for the movie, with an additional backend deal worth $5 million, bringing his total earned from the film to $30 million.

No Time To Die

In 2021, Daniel Craig starred as James Bond for the finale time in No Time To Die. While the pandemic originally delayed the film, the October 2021 release was a huge success for MGM. The film grossed more than $770 million worldwide on its $250 million budget.

No Time to Die earned $20 million on its opening night alone. And Craig was paid a massive $25 million salary upfront for the film. It’s also expected that he received backend points on the film, earning additional income from the movie’s net profits at the box office.

Other Film Projects

Daniel Craig has worked on a handful of other films while starring in the James Bond franchise, including The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Cowboys & Aliens.

Craig starred in 2011’s Cowboys & Aliens alongside Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde. The film wasn’t well-received by fans or film critics, and it didn’t perform well at the box office either. The movie grossed $174 million worldwide on its $163 million budget.

The same year, Craig also starred in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which was much more successful, earning $232 million on its $90 million budget.

Daniel Craig is also involved in several other ventures, notably charity work. In 2007, he partnered with British Prime Minister Tony Blair at a Comic Relief charity fundraiser. The money was donated to a wide variety of charitable causes overseas.

Real Estate

Daniel Craig has owned a variety of New York City residences throughout the years. In 2018, he and his wife purchased a brownstone in Brooklyn for a reported $6.75 million. It used to be owned by British novelist Martin Amis.

Craig and his wife also had a Manhattan apartment in the East Village. In 2019, the couple sold it for $6 million. They broke even on the property, having purchased it for the same price several years prior.

Personal Life

Craig married Fiona London, who was also an actress, in 1992. They had a daughter together, Ella Craig, before divorcing in 1994. He dated a few other entertainment professionals before eventually marrying Rachel Weisz, in 2011.

Weisz also had a son, Henry Aronofsky, from her previous relationship with filmmaker, Darren Aronofsky.

Craig and Weisz also have one child together. In 2018, the couple welcomed a daughter.

As of 2022, Daniel Craig’s net worth is estimated to be $160 million. Between his work on the big screen, on stage, and in video games, Daniel Craig has a variety of income streams. 

Fans can expect to see Craig next in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The film is set to premiere in December 2022 on Netflix. Knives Out 3 has also been announced for a 2024 release. Not much is known about the movie yet, but IMDB does report it will have a $40 million budget.

Craig is also attached to Todd Field’s The Creed of Violence as the character Rawbone. But as of writing this, the project’s development status is unknown.
