Movie fans are about to see a lot more from the Tron Universe. Not only is the new Tron ride getting ready to open at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, but Tron 3, officially known as Tron: Ares, is also in the works. And Jared Leto is the latest actor to sign on to the upcoming project.

The History of the Tron Film Franchise

The original film, which was released in 1982, saw Jeff Bridges in the lead role as Kevin Flynn. And with a production budget of $17 million, the film grossed over $33 million worldwide. The 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy (which starred Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde), far surpassed the box office success of the first film, making over $400 million worldwide on a budget of $170 million.

It was 28 years after the original film when Tron: Legacy hit cinemas. The movie tells the story of a computer hacker who is transported into a computer program called the Grid and forced to take part in challenges.

The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski. And there were plans in place for him to direct the third film as well. However, those plans were scrapped in 2015.

Attempts to Revive the Tron Franchise

A further attempt to revive the franchise again in 2020 with director Garth Davis in charge also floundered before getting off the ground. This time, with a push from Leto, who is also listed among the Tron: Ares‘ producers.

Tron 3 to Begin Production this Summer

Tron: Ares is the third film in the sci-fi franchise. The movie is finally moving forward, 13 years after the release of Tron: Legacy. The script has been written by Jesse Wigutow, while Joachim Ronning is said to be in talks to direct the film.

While 13 years is a pretty big gap between Tron: Legacy and Tron: Ares. It’ll be an additional two years before the film hits theater. Production has not yet begun. And right now, the film is scheduled for a 2025 release.

Currently, production is expected to begin in August in Vancouver, Canada, according to reports from Deadline.com. Jared Leto will lead the film as the titular character Ares.

Leto was seen last year starring in Marvel’s Morbius, which, while not loved by critics, was a box office success, grossing $167 million worldwide against a $75 million budget.
