High School DxD Season 5 is Coming

High School DxD, the popular anime, is returning to the screens for season five. The upcoming season is nearly six years since Season 4’s release in 2018. In 2019, franchise producer Satoshi Motonaga floated plans to make new episodes or even a movie for the anime adaptation.

High School DxD is the anime adaptation of the light novel series by Ichiei Ishibumi and Miyama-Zero. The light novel series has 25 volumes and has its own spinoff called Shin High School DxD. The first serialization of the novel series started in 2008 in Fujimi Shobo’s Dragon Magazine and has since been adapted into different mediums.

The show follows Issei Hyodo, who studied at the all-girl Kuoh Academy when it became co-ed. When Issei is killed on his first date, he gets resurrected by a devil princess named Rias Gremory, bringing him back to life as a devil. Issei becomes indebted to Rias and her family. Issei’s deepening relationship with Rias turns into a danger for angels, fallen angels, and even devils.

High School DxD is divided into five story arcs: The Red Dragon Emperor’s Awakening, Birth of the Breast Dragon Emperor, The Heroic Oppai Dragon, The Legend of Oppai Dragon and His Lively Companions, and the Red Dragon Emperor of the Blazing Truth x White Dragon Emperor of the Morning Star. The latter is alternatively titled The True Dragons of the Kuoh Academy.

The anime caught the attention of fans worldwide with its mix of the supernatural with the steamy. Adding to what makes this stand out is its harem cast of characters. Exploring love, friendship, and loyalty, it’s no wonder High School DxD is one of the popular shows.

What Happened in Season 4

Season 4 of High School DxD was titled “Lion Heart of the School Festival,” and saw Issei face off against Sairaorg Bael. Issei won and was crowned the new Rating Game King of the World. Azazel confronted Indra about Cao Cao and his connection to him. Indra knew the truth but Azazel ignored it.

By the end of the season, the characters celebrated their accomplishment following the fight. But fans were given a cliffhanger ending when Issei received a message from an unknown sender.

In 2019, Motonaga talked to Monsters and Critics about the fans’ response to the Episode 0 retcon. Motonaga explained that the reaction helped prepare the fans for the changes in terms of the new animation studio and the character design ahead of the fourth season. Motonaga said the fans initially didn’t mind the changes when it was revealed that Issei heard the “Oppai Dragon” children’s song in the new version.

“I think there was some concern among the fans with the shift in animation studio along with the character design. But I think once Episode 0 aired and the Oppai Dragon song started playing there was a lot of laughter and that kind of transitioned into acceptance,” said Motonaga.

“We actually didn’t publicize that there was going to be an Episode 0,” Motonaga went on to say at the time. “Everywhere on the websites, it said we were going to start with Episode 1 so I think Episode 0 came as a surprise. It’s kind of like a review of the past series, but I think the Oppai Dragon song brought it into acceptance. The song trended on Twitter and Yahoo searches as well.”

What to Expect For Season 5

Plot-wise, High School DxD Season 5 will continue the adaptation of volumes 11 and 12 of the light novel series. The good news is that there’s enough source material for the anime, giving fans the hope that Season 5 will come sooner.

For the fifth season, Issei and his companions are set to navigate the Middle-Class Promotion Test. However, they’ll find themselves in a spot of trouble when Azazel introduces them to the Ouroboros Dragon and Ophis, the leader of the Khaos Brigade.
