Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Scores 18 Nominations for 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards

This morning, the Critics Choice Association (CCA) unveiled the film category nominees for the 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards, recognizing the year’s standout cinematic achievements. Leading the pack is Barbie, with 18 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Comedy, and acting nods for stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrera.

Close behind is Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Yorgos Lanthimos’ genre-bending Poor Things with 13 nominations each, followed by Martin Scorsese’s star-studded Killers of the Flower Moon with 12 nominations. Rounding out the Best Picture category alongside Barbie is The Color Purple, The Holdovers, Saltburn, Past Lives, Maestro, and American Fiction.

“We are so excited to celebrate this year’s remarkable projects, performances, and the people who made it all possible at the 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards,” said CCA CEO Joey Berlin. “This year saw an incredible number of blockbuster hits and beautiful stories brought to life in these exceptional films.”

Barbie‘s Massive 18 Nominations

Barbie also racked up several acting nods, including Best Actress for Margot Robbie in the titular role. Her co-star Ryan Gosling earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his turn as Ken. Rounding out the film’s acting nominations are America Ferrera for Best Supporting Actress and Ariana Greenblatt for Best Young Actress. The cast also scored a Best Ensemble nomination for their vibrant performances.

In addition to the acting categories, Barbie also earned recognition for behind-the-scenes talent. Greta Gerwig scored a Best Director nomination as well as a nomination for Best Original Screenplay, which she shares with co-writer Noah Baumbach. Rodrigo Prieto also earned a cinematography nomination for bringing the doll’s trademark pink aesthetic to life.

The production and costume design teams were also recognized for the film’s eye-catching visuals. Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer are up for Best Production Design, having crafted Barbie and Ken’s glossy Malibu Dreamhouse. Jacqueline Durran joins them as a nominee for Best Costume Design for her playful, nostalgic outfits. Rounding out the below-the-line nominations for “Barbie” are nods for Best Editing for editor Nick Houy and Best Hair and Makeup.

When Will the Critics Choice Awards Air?

Winners will be revealed at the Critics Choice Awards ceremony, airing on January 14, 2024, on The CW. Hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler, the gala honors outstanding achievements in both film and television ahead of the Oscar race.
