Despite no formal renewal announcement yet from Apple TV+, it appears that Invasion Season 3 may have gotten the green light on the down low. According to Production Weekly, the series will begin filming on February 12 in Vancouver and continue until September 6, 2024.
With its second season concluding in October 2023, fans have eagerly awaited an official confirmation for Season 3 – especially with how the second season ended. It’s clear there’s still plenty of story to tell.
Here’s what we know so far about Invasion Season 3.
Is Invasion Returning for Season 3?
So, will there be an Invasion Season 3? Given recent production notices for filming, the answer seems to be yes. However, it’s still unclear why Apple hasn’t officially announced the series’ renewal yet.
The show’s co-creator, Simon Kinberg, gave an update that could bode well for the series’ future.
Kinberg told SlashFilm that he thought of Season 2 as the first part of a larger series. He added that he has a vision for Invasion that could go up to Season 4. Kinberg also shared that scripts for Season 3 were already being developed before 2023’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“I saw the second season as part one, like the first 30 minutes of the second act of a movie, which is where you really start to get into the action,” said Kinberg. “Then I saw, in my hopes and dreams, a Season 3 like the back half of the second act of a movie where now the action is really accelerated and the challenges are massive and seem insurmountable. Then if, God willing, we were to have a fourth season, that’s where, for me, it would be the third act of just final conflict and everything erupting, and then resolving. So there was a build, and it did mimic in many ways the structure of a movie.”
Kinberg continued, “We were working on Season 3 scripts before the strike started and we’re working on those scripts, and the response to Season 2 has been really, really, positive, and even bigger than Season 1. Apple’s been really happy with the show. So fingers crossed we will get a shot at making Season 3.”
Invasion Season 3 Cast: Who Will Return?
It’s expected that the cast for Invasion Season 3 will remain the same as the first two. That’s not to say there won’t be any new faces introduced. So fans can only wait and see who else is brought into the show.
The cast includes Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha, Shamier Anderson as Trevante, Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuki, and Billy Barratt as Caspar. Also expected to come back in case of renewal are Togo Igawa as Ikuro Murai, Kaito Kawaguchi as Daisuke Tsuji, and Azhy Robertson as Luke. The same could be said for Tara Moayedi as Sarah.
Also likely to return after being introduced in Season 2 are Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans, Nedra Marie Taylor as Rose Callaway, and Naian Gonzalez Norvind as Maya Castillo.
Kinberg also serves as the showrunner, with co-creator David Weil. Both Kinberg and Weil also serve as executive producers alongside Audrey Chon, David Witz, Alik Sakharov, Andrew Baldwin, and Katie O’Connell Marsh.
What Happened in Season 2?
In an interview with Collider, Kinberg echoed envisioning Invasion as a four-season arc. Kinberg also touched on the fate of Mitsuki following the events of Season 2. When pressed on whether fans will get to see more of the character in Invasion Season 3, Kinberg declined to reveal anything just yet.
“I think she’s the soul of the show. Aneesha is the heart of the show because Aneesha is the character who evolves the most from season to season,” said Kinberg. “If you think about the fact that she was living a deeply disempowered life when we met her in Season 1 all the way to being kind of a freedom fighter in Season 2, that’s a very broad arc for her. Often I think about the protagonist, especially in an ensemble having worked with something like X-Men where you’re working with lots of different characters – for me, different X-Men movies had different protagonists. It wasn’t always Wolverine or Professor X, it was just whoever had the broadest arc journey, and that’s Aneesha in this so far.”
By the end of Season 2, Mitsuki and Caspar meet within the hive mind of the alien brain inside the downed alien spacecraft in the Brazilian Forest. Aneesha pairs up with the jailed Trevante at a military facility in Oklahoma. The facility in question also happens to have some of the answers to Trevante’s questions about Caspar’s sketches. All the while, Aneesha is trying to rescue her daughter Sarah after the army captured her.
What to Expect in Season 3?
The official synopsis of Invasion reads:
“Earth is visited by an alien species that threatens humanity’s existence. Events unfold in real-time through the eyes of five ordinary people across the globe as they struggle to make sense of the chaos unraveling around them.”
With production starting in February on Invasion Season 3, an official renewal announcement is likely coming soon from Apple. So what can fans look forward to storywise with new episodes?
With four characters pairing up, a Season 3 would see how these pairs work together. Caspar, who was believed to be dead, teams up with Mitsuki. Mitsuki has been looking into the weaknesses of the alien invaders to prepare for an attack. Trevante is working his way through the military base with the help of a local named Rose.
With Caspar’s help, Trevante appeals to the International Madam President Learah. He says that he’s the right person to take on the alien forces. However, Learah rejects his appeal. She thinks that he’s too reckless to be trusted with the future of the entire human race.
There’s also Aneesha’s rescue efforts for her daughter Sarah as well as her gifted son Luke. Luke has the psychic ability to neutralize the incoming aliens. This ability will most likely come into play even more in case of a Season 3.
Invasion Season 3 Release Date Speculation
As mentioned earlier, Apple has not officially announced Invasion Season 3, so there’s no set release date yet. For comparison, Season 2 was confirmed by the time the first season finale aired. The second season finale aired in October 2023. However, the SAG-AFTRA strike was still going on at that time, so Apple likely held renewal announcements.
According to recent production notices, filming for Invasion Season 3 will start on February 12, 2024 through September 6, 2024 in Vancouver and New York under the working titles “Ray James” and “Kanji.” Based on this schedule, the upcoming season of Invasion will likely not arrive on Apple TV+ until sometime in 2025.
For now, fans can rewatch the first two seasons on Apple TV+.
