Summary: Civil War follows a small team of journalists who are traveling as the country is embroiled in its first Civil War since the 1800s. California and Texas have seceded from the United States to form the Western Forces and its war.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, and Jesse Plemons.

Word on the Street: The movie is from filmmaker Alex Garland, known for his award-winning films Ex-Machina (2015), Annihilation (2018) and Men (2022).

My Take: I loved Garland’s film Ex-Machina.

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 12, 2024.

Summary: In Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, Tanya (Simone Joy Jones) finds her summer plans canceled when her mom goes on a last-minute retreat. Things go from bad to worse when the elderly babysitter (June Squibb), who has just arrived, dies. Tanya thinks her plans might be back on, but first, she must figure out how to cover up the death.

What to Watch For: Simone Joy Jones is best known for her role as Lisa Wilkes on the TV series Bel-Air.

Word on the Street: This is a remake of the 1991 cult classic of the same name that starred a very young Christia Applegate.

My Take: June Squibb was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the 2013 film Nebraska.

The Greatest Hits   (2024)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: Premiering on Hulu on Friday, April 12, 2024.

Summary: The Greatest Hits is about Harriet (Lucy Boynton), who lost her boyfriend, Max (David Corenswet), in an accident over two years ago. Harriet thinks she is getting over her grief when she meets a new guy (Justin H. Min) at her grief counseling group. The only problem is that when Harriet hears certain songs, she gets transported back to a time when Max was still alive.

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Ned Benson, who won the Un Certain Regard award at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival for The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them.

Word on the Street:  David Corenswet has made waves recently by being cast as Clark Kent, aka Superman in James Gunn’s Superman film.

My Take: Lucy Boynton is in one of my all-time favorite films, Sing Street (2016).

Sting    (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 12, 2024.

Summary: In Sting, Charlotte (Alyla Browne), a rebellious 12-year-old, feels neglected by her mother and stepfather, who have a new baby to deal with. Charlotte comes across a baby spider and gives it the name Sting. The problem is that Sting is growing at a monstrous rate and will soon be too big to handle, especially since Sting has developed a taste for human blood.

What to Watch For: The five-time Oscar-winning special effects studio Weta Workshop created the physical effects in their workshop in New Zealand.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, whose 2015 film Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, won Best International Science Fiction Film from the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival.

My Take: If you are scared of spiders, you might want to avoid the trailer for the film.

In Flames   (2023)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 12, 2024.

Summary: In Flames is about Mariam (Ramesha Nawal), who is trying to hold her family together, along with her mother, when her grandfather suddenly dies. The family is now at the mercy of her uncle, and they will have to find strength in each other if they are going to survive.

What to Watch For: The film was a nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2024 Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Writer/director Zarrar Kahn is best known for his film festival hit, the narrative short 2020 film Stray Dogs Come Out at Night.

My Take: The film was the official submission of Pakistan for the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category of the 96th Academy Awards in 2024.

Food, Inc. 2   (2023)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 12, 2024.

Summary: The documentary Food, Inc. 2 examines how corporate consolidation has gone unchecked, leaving us with a shockingly vulnerable food system that cuts corners to increase profits.

What to Watch For: This is a sequel of sorts from Robert Kenner and Melissa Robledo, who brought us the Oscar-nominated film Food, Inc. in 2008.

Word on the Street: The film was nominated for two awards at the 2024 Docville Film Festival.

My Take: I love the tagline for the film: “Back for Seconds.”
