Interview: Zachary Levi from Chuck

We caught up with Zachary Levi to chat about Chuck at Comic Con ’09. Check it out below!

How much has being friends with Josh Gomez influenced you to grow facial hair?

Zachery Levi: That’s an excellent question. I think that I actually inspired his. We’re both lazy, that’s really what it comes down to. I have to shave everyday for work. When I’m not having to work, I’m not shaving. I boycott shaving. I’ll trim it, I’ll keep it clean. You gotta respect it. My girlfriend is fine with it, so it’s like rock and roll. Do it.

How great was it to finally get into the kung fu aspect of the show?Did you ever see Cowboy Bebop?

Zachery Levi: I have not. Somebody just told me the other day they were making a movie of it and they were like, “I want you to be in Cowboy Bebop!” I think Keanu Reeves is doing it.

You would be better for Spike after seeing your kung fu scene.

Zachery Levi: Well thank you very much. I appreciate that.

He’s a tall, lanky gentleman.

Zachery Levi: Well, there you go.

Did you ever expect Chuck to be this phenomenon that it is?

Zachery Levi: Yes and no. I read the pilot back when I was unemployed, and I was like this is an awesome show. This is a show that I would watch and I would love to be a part of. Certainly not getting my hopes up too much at that point. Then I got the job and I was like, wow. Hopefully the pilot will be good, and we’ll get picked up, and we did. And then coming down to Comic-Con the first year when we premiered the pilot, and we were in one of the smaller halls, there was still a lot of people there, but not anything like this. I think that it is such a blessing to be able to do what I do, but more than that, to be a part of a show that people love like this. That they will come out like this in mass, and fill an entire hall, wear Nerd Heard shirts and Jeffster shirts and all this. Some of them are just making this stuff at home, like Sharpie, you know? It’s amazing, and I just hope that we continue to do the show justice and our fans justice because we’re not a huge ratings juggernaut. What we lack in numbers
we make up for in just sheer fan passion and unfired and that’s the kind of thing I want to be a part of.

Are you feeling the pressure?

Zachery Levi: No, I think they’re very forgiving. We do screw up.

Are you going to replace your old Tron poster with the Tron Legacy poster when it comes out?

Zachery Levi: I don’t know about that? It’s kind of classic Tron. Plus Bruce was on the show although he’s gonna be on the new ones.

What’s your favorite comic book character?

Zachery Levi: Oh gosh, uh, honestly Dead Pool. As far as good guys, I like Gambit is my favorite X-Men.
