Lena Dunham was left in shock while shooting a guest appearance on hit political drama Scandal after discovering costume designers use real diamonds and top fashion labels to dress their stars.
The Girls creator and star previously admitted joining leading lady Kerry Washington on Scandal would be a dream come true, and showrunner Shonda Rhimes helped to grant her wish by offering her a small part in the current fourth season of the series.
Dunham was overjoyed by the opportunity and admits she was stunned at how much money TV bosses at ABC put into the series’ production after realising cast members were dressed in nothing but the best, and accessorized with real jewels.
Discussing the differences between the major network show and her own low-budget drama Girls, she says, “I would say the major difference is everyone on Scandal is just dripping with class. When I put my costumes on (for Scandal), I thought, ‘You know what? I think this character might wear diamonds’, and I asked, ‘Do you think I’ll be able to have some little diamond studs (earrings), maybe a necklace?’
“When you say that on Girls, you’re handed a box from Claire’s Accessories (cheap costume jewelry store)… They went into a safe and they busted out diamonds. I was texting everyone I knew: ‘Do you know they’ve got freaking diamonds on the Scandal set, dude? Get over here now!’.
“I couldn’t believe it. And with the shoes, I’d be staring at the label, the filthy label whore I am, just looking into everybody’s shoes, like, ‘Oh my God, Prada? Real Prada?’.”
