Johnny Depp recently admitted that the departure of Disney studio chief Dick Cook had caused him to lose enthusiasm in doing the next ‘Pirates of the Caribbean movie’ (titled ‘On Stranger Tides’), and now it looks like Disney is ready to do the movie, and future Pirates films, without him if necessary.
Reports are that the studio is making preparations to replace Depp’s Jack Sparrow with a new character if he decides to not return. According to the report, Disney is willing to offer him major money to return for the fourth film, but the general feeling is that even if they talk him into doing the next one, he won’t do a fifth and sixth one, both of which Disney does plan to do.
The fourth film is expected to be somewhat based on the Tim Powers novel, “On Stranger Tides,” which Disney owns the rights to. The book is about a pirate search for the Fountain of Youth and leaves room to introduce a new character who aids the pirates in their search for the location.
It has been speculated that the new character introduced in the next film, and perhaps replace Depp’s Sparrow character, could be played by one of Hollywood’s top young stars, such as Shia LaBeouf, Zac Efron, James Franco, Ryan Gosling, Ben Whishaw, Anton Yelchin, or Robert Pattinson.
