Laverne Cox, known for her amazing work among the LGBT community as well as her role as Sophia Burset on hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black, recently stripped down for Allure and talked to the mag about what made her decide to move forward with the photoshoot.

The star initially didn’t want to do the nude shoot with Allure, but eventually changed her mind saying, “Going through life, you try to cover and hide, but it doesn’t really work.”

“I said no initially, thought about it, and said no again,” she told the mag. “But I’m a black transgender woman. I felt this could be really powerful for the communities that I represent. Black women are not often told that we’re beautiful unless we align with certain standards. Trans women certainly are not told we’re beautiful. Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about herself might be inspiring to some other folks.

“There’s beauty in the things we think are imperfect. That sounds very cliché, but it’s true.”

The star has been an inspiration for many, encouraging the youth to be who they are as well as opening doors for the transgender community through her work.
