‘Dead to Me’ Season 3: What Fans Need to Know

Dead to Me Season 3

After the explosive season finale, Dead to Me Season 3 cannot come soon enough. The series starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini had 30 million viewers in the first month of its release. And the popularity of this Netflix original has only grown as it entered its second season.

So when will we get the next, and final, chapter to the dark comedy series that’s had us hooked from the start? Let’s take a look at what we know so far.

The Season 3 Renewal

After the success of Season 1 and 2, Netflix renewed the series for its final season. Dead to Me Season 1 aired in May 2019, and Season 2 aired the following year in May 2020. However, Dead to Me Season 3 wasn’t able to follow this pattern due to production delays.

The third season of the series started filming in Spring 2021, despite several COVID-related delays. However, not long after things got started back up, the production paused again in light of a major health event with Christina Applegate (who plays Jen).

In August 2021, Applegate announced to her followers that she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis on Twitter.

The show’s crew is more than happy to wait until she is healthy enough to film, as there is no show without her. However, with these two significant delays, limited production information is available for the upcoming season. At this time, Netflix has not confirmed when Season 3 will begin filming again.

Dead to Me Cast Season 3

Dead to Me Season 3 Cast

Dead to Me would not exist without the incredible powerhouses that are Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, so they will, of course, reprise their roles.

We can also expect Jen’s children, Charlie and Henry, to continue on the show, so we’ll see Sam McCarthy and Luke Roessler reprise their roles. Ana Perez and Nick, the detective in charge of the hit and run case and a cop, will be played by Diana-Maria Riva and Brandon Scott once again.

James Marsden will continue to play the role of Steve’s twin brother Ben. Jen’s neighbor Karen, friend Christopher, and mother-in-law Lorna will be played again by Suzy Nakamura, Max Jenkins, and Valerie Mahaffey. Keong Sim will reappear as Pastor Wayne.

We cannot confirm any other additions or repeats from previous seasons. But we can be almost certain that these essential characters will return.

Dead to Me Season 3 Plot

So what can we expect from Dead to Me Season 3 when it premieres on Netflix?

When GoldDerby interviewed Cardellini (Judy) on what to expect in Season 3, she said, “I always say whatever I can think of, Liz always comes up with something a million times better, and the writers. You think you know where they’re going, and they take another turn, and you didn’t see it coming. I’m excited to find out.”

There are a number of things that Season 3 will need to address: namely the newest hit and run and the dead body uncovered by a dog in the forest.

When interviewed by Vulture, showrunner Liz Feldman did let slip a few secrets about how the current state of the world will impact the final season. “I had a version of an end for season three that I’m rethinking, actually. Because I think it’s important to pay attention to where we are collectively as a human race and to be sensitive to the fact that our audience is living through this incredibly difficult moment in history.”

Feldman continued to say, “This experience is going to color what we end up exploring in season three. We’re all going through a traumatic moment, and this show is very much about trauma and grief and loss.”

We’re seeing this type of plot alteration in other shows like Brooklyn 99 (which aired its finale in September of 2021). Feldman assures us that we won’t see Jen (Christina Appelgate) and Judy (Linda Cardellini) with masks on.

She wants to keep Dead to Me Season 3 timeless, not stuck in a specific era.

Dead To Me Season 3 Release Date

While we are not yet sure of when Dead to Me Season 3 will be released, we do know that it is the final installment to the Dead to Me series.

Showrunner Liz Feldman said, “I always knew from the inception of the show that I didn’t want it to be a long long-running show. Then there was a certain point when we were in production on season two when the end of the show came to me, pretty profoundly. So I realized, ‘I know the story that I have to tell,’ and season three feels like the right time to do that.”

Feldman continued to say, “It’s just something that came to me organically. And I tend to try to follow the gut feelings I have. This show means so much to me, and I just want to get it right. And I saw a way to do that. I think three seasons for this show is the right amount.”

We’re sad to see the story come to an end. But we can respect her fidelity to the quality of the show’s story. We’re excited to see the final installment whenever it does release on the streaming platform.

As far as our best bet on when the new season will premiere, right now, it’s unlikely to be before late 2022. It’s possible that it may even be early 2023. We’ll keep you posted as more release date news surfaces.

  1. I do not see any reason to have a season 3 if it’s not going to be released until late 2022 or 2023, after all this time, I have lost interest!

    1. Typical response from this generation of instant gratification. As opposed to your own self interests, maybe take a moment for some empathy as to why there is a delay. Actors and actresses are human as well, and their health is more important than your interest in their work.
