‘Wednesday’ Season 2 Update: Release Date Speculation, News, Cast, and More
Wednesday Season 2 is gearing up to start filming in late April in Wicklow, Ireland. The Addams Family spinoff series quickly became a major hit on Netflix. In fact, the first season of the show became the most popular English-language series of all time on the platform, beating out Stranger Things.
With Wednesday Season 2 filming right around the corner – what do we know about the upcoming season? Read on to find out. Note, spoilers ahead for Season 1.
Wednesday Renewed for Second Season
Director Tim Burton’s reimagining of the popular character became a major hit on Netflix leading to its renewal. The news of the show’s renewal came with a slight problem. While Netflix is keen to keep Wednesday on its platform and make more Addams Family shows, Amazon acquired MGM and MGM owns the rights to The Addams Family.
The acquisition seemed to look like Prime Video could take pick up Wednesday instead and take it out of Netflix. Fortunately, Netflix kept the show and potentially the shared universe of the popular character.
The upcoming season will also see the show’s star Jenna Ortega taking on a bigger role in her involvement with the show moving forward. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ortega revealed that she’ll be serving as producer on season two. Ortega explained that her becoming a producer was out of wanting to take a more collaborative approach to the show.
“I think a project is best when there’s as many voices and ideas thrown out as possible,” said Ortega.
Ortega drew a lot of attention over her previous comments about changing her character’s lines. But during a roundtable interview, Ortega spoke about feeling unheard and overlooked in previous projects. This led to her voicing her opinions more strongly on the Netflix show.
Wednesday Cast
For Wednesday Season 2, we can expect most of the cast from season one to return. Along with Ortega as the titular character, we can also expect Emma Meyers as Enid, Percy Hynes White as Xavier, Joy Sunday as Bianca, and Moosa Mostafa as Eugene.
We can also expect the rest of the Addams Family to return. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman are also expected to return as Morticia and Gomez Addams. Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley, Fred Armisen as Fester Addams, and George Burcea as Lurch are also expected to come back for Season 2.
One character who will not likely come back for season two is Larissa Weems, played by Gwendoline Christie since Larissa was killed off in the finale. The fate of Laurel Gates, played by 90s Wednesday Addams herself, Christina Ricci, is ambiguous by the end of season 1. So it’s not clear whether Ricci will return.
Even when it’s not certain if Laurel Gates will come back, Ricci said in an interview that she’s happy to return for Season 2. However, Ricci stayed tight-lipped on whether she knows anything about the upcoming season.
“I don’t think I’m allowed to say. On my end, the door is open. She was so fun to play! It’s always so fun to play a villain,” said Ricci.
Along with returning characters, it has been confirmed that a new Addams Family member will be introduced in Season 2. While the details of the character are scarce, including who is cast to play that character. It’s possible it may be the hairy Cousin Itt, who was voiced by Snoop Dogg in the most recent animated Addams Family movie.
Wednesday Season 2 Plot
There have yet to be details on what fans can expect from Wednesday Season 2. It may likely follow a similar theme as season one, specifically a new murder mystery. If we can recall, the Season 1 finale showed Wednesday returning home for summer vacation only to receive threatening messages. The text messages included photos of her speaking to Tyler in the coffee shop and Xavier giving her a new phone.
Wednesday assumes that she now has her own stalker. This mysterious figure may serve as Wednesday’s foe in season two. The setup may also hint that Josep Crackstone’s plan to get rid of outcasts isn’t done yet. The last sequence of the first season also revealed that Tyler can still turn into a Hyde, suggesting that he’ll be out for blood in Season 2.
The first season also teased a possible romance between Wednesday and Xavier. The upcoming season may also answer the question of whether Bianca Harday will come back to Nevermore Academy.
What Else to Expect?
Wednesday costume designer Colleen Atwood revealed that the Addams Family mansion will play a bigger role in Wednesday Season 2.
“Season 2, she’ll have a lot of looks, so it’ll be really fun to see what Morticia does when she’s you know, out of the dress and into around-the-house looks,” said Atwood, hinting that Morticia and Gomez Addams will become more prominent in the second season.
But Atwood’s comments also point out a detail that hasn’t been looked into in the previous iterations. Morticia is known for her black dress, which she wears in the two episodes she appeared in season one. So, to see Morticia wearing something else other than her iconic black dress is a small but significant change.
Guzman revealed that Gomez would be doing some dancing and sword-fighting in season two. This may likely be at the Addams Family mansion or on the grounds
In January 2023, Wednesday showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough told Tudum that they want to “dive headfirst into another season and explore the kooky, spooky world of Nevermore. We just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.”
Wednesday “sticks to her guns, and she’s not out to please anybody,” Ortega told Tudum in February 2023. “Which, as someone who used to be an immense people pleaser, I really respect.”
Wednesday Season 2 Release Date Updates & News
In March 2023, during an appearance on Jimmy Fallon, Ortega said the writers’ room was assembled and they were talking about how the upcoming season will go. Separately, in April 2023, Ortega talked about her summer plans and hinted that she might be busy filming.
“No vacations or anything like that. We are starting to prep season two of Wednesday, which…has been exciting. Just developing new storylines and seeing where characters are going. Starting those conversations has been really, really, fun. I think it’s going to be bigger and better, which is cool,” Ortega told Glamour.
No word yet on a release date for Wednesday Season 2. We do know that production was scheduled to begin in October 2023 in Romania. However, production was been delayed due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Production is now set to begin in Wicklow, Ireland in late April 2024 under the working title “Willow Hill.”
Release date-wise, it’s not likely we’ll see Wednesday Season 2 premiere before 2025. But we’ll keep this post updated as more news surfaces!
