Squid Game became an international sensation after Netflix started streaming the hit Korean show globally. The show tackles income inequality, the corruption of capitalism, and the cycle of poverty in such a visceral way that the world can’t wait for Squid Game Season 2.
So when will we get the continuation of Seong Gi-hun’s crusade against the game that made him a billionaire? Here’s everything we know about what’s to come with Squid Game Season 2.
Squid Game Season 1 Recap
Woah. The first season of Squid Game had our eyes glued to the screen as we watched with horror as 456 players dwindled down to 1 surviving winner.
Squid Game revolves around the life of Seong Gi-hun, a divorced man with a horrible gambling problem and no shortage of debt. He tries to be present for his daughter, but with his reputation as a drunk and a gambler, he doesn’t get to see her very often.
He gets invited to participate in a game with an outlandish cash prize. The person inviting him knows all about his debt and a shocking amount of his personal information. Intrigued and desperate, he follows the instructions to join the game.
He awakens in a room with the number 456 on his chest with 455 other players. They are given instructions on how to play the game, but until they start to play Red Light Green Light, they don’t know that their lives are on the line.
The winner is the one who can survive all 6 games. ₩100 million is added to the prize pool every time someone dies.
As the show revolves around Seong Gi-hun, you can guess from the beginning that he will win. What you don’t anticipate is the mounting heartache and horror you experience after each episode.
And the final episode where you realize who the true Squid Game creator was all along? Sickening.
The season ends with Seong making a choice between boarding a plane to see his daughter in America and following the instructions from a phone number he found to re-enter the game so he can take it down from the inside.
Squid Game Season 2 Announcements
Squid Game Season 2 was only just announced on November 9, 2021, and since the first season was announced in 2019 and didn’t air until 2021, we might have to wait a bit for Season 2.
Creator, writer, and director Hwang Dong-hyuk is used to waiting. He first came up with the concept in 2008. At one point, he had to sell his laptop just to get by.
But we don’t just have Squid Game Season 2 to look forward to. Dong-hyuk told Korea Times, “I’m in talks with Netflix over season two as well as season three. We will come to a conclusion any time soon.”
He discussed what it feels like to be the creator of such a popular show. From a Korean translation, “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!”
“But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this…(in English) Gi-Hun will come back, and he will do something for the world.” He continues.
However, the plans aren’t completely fleshed out, and he said, “It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers room and would want multiple experienced directors.”
Perhaps with a bigger team behind him, we won’t have to wait a whole two years for production.
Squid Game Season 2 Cast
So who will star in Squid Game Season 2?
The best place to start is by asking who survived Season 1.
In a series with death as the premise, you almost need to bring in an entirely new cast to start another season. Lee Jung-jae, the actor who portrayed Seong Gi-hun, will of course play a pivotal role in Season 2.
As the sole survivor of the games, (since O Yeong-su as Oh Il-nam died in the final episode after surviving the games), the other players only have a chance to return through flashbacks.
While Lee Jung-jae was already a well-known Korean actor before Squid Game, HoYeon Jung found stardom on the show. Fans want her to return, but unfortunately, her death makes that impossible.
Even if the show wanted to use her in a flashback, she announced she wants to pursue a career in Hollywood, which would make her largely unavailable.
Other Returning Characters
One character that could easily return is the Front Man, played by Lee Byung-hun. Audiences and critics were rather shocked when he removed his mask; why did marketing hide such a huge star with international acclaim?
Whatever their reason, the shock was twofold when you discovered that he was the brother of the policeman, Detective Hwang Jun-ho played by Wi Ha-Jun. While it seemed pretty conclusive that the Detective died after his brother shot him, Wi Ha-Jun holds out hope that he pulled through.
The actor said, “I’m dying to know what happened to him. I want him to return alive, find his brother and ask him tons of questions. As a brother, I would ask him sincerely.”
Another possible return could be one of the other high-profile cameos. Star Gong Yoo played The Salesman, the man who originally enticed Gi-hun to join the Squid Games. Having such a high-profile actor in the role opens the character up to a possible return.
Squid Game Season 2 Release Date
As the announcement for the greenlighting of Squid Game Season 2 only came in November 2021, there’s no exact release date yet, or production start date. However, it’s expected that they’ll go by the same timetable as the first season. And if Netflix does that, the second season should premiere in late 2023 at the earliest.
However, as creator Hwang Dong-hyuk mentioned his hopes for a bigger production team, maybe we won’t have to wait as long for the next installment. Until the next season of this battle royale returns, Netflix has many other incredible Korean TV shows for you to enjoy.Recommend0 recommendationsPublished in
